Did you know that the supermodel and 90s style icon who influenced the fashion world with her minimal aesthetic of slip dresses, skinny jeans and t-shirts, and leopard print jackets is also a connoisseur of jewelry? We are, of course, talking about Kate Moss. Of all the things that Moss is famous for jewelry rarely tops the list. However, the supermodel has been a passionate jewelry collector since she was a teenager. It was a chance encounter with jewelry designer Valérie Messika that pushed Moss to explore her creative side with jewels.
“It was a spontaneous decision to do a high jewelry collection with Kate. I met her two years ago at the Ritz. Surprisingly, she was wearing a lot of jewelry, and I became curious to know the various stories behind her jewels. That’s when I discovered that Kate was obsessed with jewelry; particularly, high jewelry pieces. I took a chance and asked her if she would be interested in co-designing a high jewelry collection with me. She said yes straight away,” Messika told Savoir Flair in an exclusive interview about her collaboration with Moss.
What happens when a jewelry designer and a fashion icon collaborate? In Moss and Messika’s case, the two dynamic women explored each others’ creativity giving birth to a bold, eclectic, and expressive collection with “freedom” at its heart.
Commenting on the Messika by Kate Moss collection, the designer said, “We both follow our natural instincts and are free women. We don’t follow the rules. It was evident that our co-designed collection would resonate with the word ‘freedom’. Every step in creating this collection was done hand-in-hand, starting from the building of mood boards to making the wax molds, through to crafting the final pieces. I enjoyed seeing how curious and involved she was through every step of the process. As you might imagine, she is particular, which was fun to see because I, too, am quite particular in terms of jewelry design. “
The Messika by Kate Moss collection is largely inspired by Moss’s personal jewelry collection. The striking, colorful, oversized treasures resting in Moss’s jewelry box were far from Messika’s design codes, but also an exciting opportunity for the house to widen its horizons. Together, the two talented women imagined a high jewelry collection that embodies both the maison’s values as well as Moss’s style.
“I wanted to push the traditional boundaries of high jewelry and decided to combine colored stones with diamonds and gold. While designing the Messika by Kate Moss collection, we started to play with the idea of a green set as it is Kate’s favorite color. It looked so beautiful that we decided to replicate the same in Turquoise and White Mother of Pearl. Kate loved the final result. It is important to keep exploring innovation and techniques in high jewelry creation and I am thrilled with the results.”
