When you think of a vacation to the remote island nation of Seychelles, it’s often the jewel-colored waters, warm tropical weather, and the allure of lazy days spent lounging under the sun that tempt you to pack your bags and find some well-deserved rest and relaxation in paradise. After all, it’s a mere four and a half hours from Dubai, which makes it the perfect destination for when we need a reset.

Such was our expectation when we arrived at Mango House Seychelles, a luxury boutique hotel tucked away on the edge of Anse Aux Poules Bleues on a private estate south of Mahé. But as it turned out, this hidden gem gave us so much more than we hoped for.

From the moment we arrived, we were swept up in the local culture and vibrant atmosphere of the island while simultaneously finding the peace, serenity, and rejuvenation we had embarked on this pilgrimage for. It was a retreat that surpassed even our wildest imagination and we left feeling deeply connected to the culture, tradition, and beauty of Seychelles with a box full of unforgettable memories.

First Impressions

The first thing you will notice is how vivid the colors of the island are. Unlike other islands, Seychelles is lush and green, with rainforest, mountains, and cliffs that meld into soft-sand beaches and inviting waters ever-shifting in hues of deep blue, emerald, and aquamarine. The vegetation is plentiful, and the animals and critters that inhabit the island are as much a part of the culture and population as the welcoming people who are almost always seen with a smile on their faces.

Mango House Seychelles is deeply rooted in its local history and culture. It is more than just a resort on an island where all there is to do is what the hotel can offer. It is strategically located to enable its guests the opportunity to explore the rich culture and distinctive character of Mahé as well as find those moments in the infinity pool looking out over an endless sea of blue.

Once the home of Milanese fashion photographer Gian Paolo Barbieri, he named the Mango House after the White Mango Tree in his kitchen garden, which still stands as a prominent feature in the center of the main house. The architecture and design of the entire property have been built to complement as well as assimilate into the natural beauty of the landscape down to the smallest details. From the Nalau and mango wood used throughout and the hand-painted ceramic vanity pots made by local craftsmen to the silk kimonos created by the artisan down the street and even the locally-sourced organic scrubs, bath salts, lotions, and amenities, each element and detail has been lovingly crafted to enhance your luxury experience, while keeping sustainability and the surrounding community at its heart.

Suite Stay

We stayed in the One Bedroom Bay House Suite with Plunge Pool and we could not have asked for a better setup for our family of four. First and foremost, the suite itself is large enough for everyone to be comfortable, and it is so beautifully decorated, you almost want to spend all your time in your room. There were two full bathrooms, a comfortable living room that easily transformed into a second bedroom with space to spare, a dining area, and a master bedroom we wish we could have at home. Along with the white, canopied bed which provided a cocoon of privacy as well as added to the ethereal feel of the room, the master bathroom boasted a large soaking tub and rain shower which were equally enjoyable.

The indoor and outdoor space flowed naturally with sliding glass doors that were the length and width of the entire wall in both rooms and offered pleasant views of the bay, greenery, and private pool. Outside on the pool deck were sun loungers and a cozy outdoor seating area where morning coffees became a ritual and a family table and umbrella that hosted many joyful lunches and family card games.

Food Matters

In all honesty, it has been a while since we stayed at a property where the food was just as important a piece of the experience as the rest of the resort. But Mango House’s five culinary outlets aren’t just good by hotel standards — they are outstanding all on their own. From upscale Japanese to brasserie-style and savory creole cuisine, every single restaurant we ate at left us satisfied and smiling.

Fresh ingredients bursting with flavors, spices, and scents would be how we would describe our favorite dish of the stay, a local octopus curry from Moutya. We also enjoyed an elegant evening feasting on fresh sushi, charcoal-grilled robatayaki, and sukiyaki wagyu beef at Azido, as well as the Italian flavors of Muse

For breakfast every morning, while overlooking the crashing waves, we were treated to platters of fresh fruit and cold cuts, homemade yogurts and hams, fresh bread, and made-to-order items like eggs, pancakes, waffles, and other breakfast staples. All in all, every meal of our stay was a standout.

Sweet Surrender

Anpe is a spa that lives up to its name, which means “at peace” in creole. The spa offers beautiful ocean views and personalized treatments from highly skilled therapists that help relax both the mind and body. We happened to come in on a drizzly part of the afternoon, and the gentle sound of rain overlooking the water was almost as soothing as the massage itself. Almost.

Anpe’s signature treatments use locally sourced products, such as the Lavi Anpe, which incorporates Mango House’s signature Banana Oil and warm granite stones to soothe muscles. The ‘Moonlight Ritual’ is perfect for couples and includes a steam-room session, desert- sand massage tables, and a private terrace. Guests can also purchase Anpe’s products to continue their relaxation at home.

Heading Out

Aside from the two main pools — one family pool overlooking the bay and one infinity pool overlooking the sea — Mango House provides guests with personalized itineraries that offer opportunities to do as little or as much as they want, whether that means staying on-site or heading off-property for adventures around the island.

At the Mango House itself, we loved our pizza-making session where we got to cook right on the beach at Muse’s open-air oven and see the culinary secrets behind our favorite lunchtime order. We also highly enjoyed our mocktail class where even the kids learned a thing or two about mixology. But our favorite activity was probably the time we spent with Nigel, the resident artist, painting away the afternoon. It was fun to indulge our artistic side and create a unique memory of our trip.

As far as activities go, there was complimentary snorkeling, kayaks, and paddle boards on the beach, as well as the option to charter a private glass-bottom boat tour, helicopter tour, sunset cruise, scuba diving, jet skiing, or even a coastal hike.

We had the chance to go explore the island on a guided tour where we saw the wonders of the island from a local perspective. Getting out and about also provided us with opportunities to meet local artisans, craftsmen, and farmers at the town market where we went to buy crafts, mementos, and of course, some fresh fruits picked that day.
