In news that will delight pet parents, Etihad Airways has just announced that passengers can bring their fur babies (cats and dogs) in the cabin with them. Although the airline has allowed trained service animals onboard the cabin since September, this new announcement is a pleasant surprise for passengers who wish to travel with their pooch or kitty with them as opposed to the cargo.

The pet must be at least 16 weeks old and weigh no more than 8kg, including their carrier, and passengers must have all the necessary travel documentation. Additionally, travelers need to submit a booking form no later than 72 hours before the flight. For Economy class passengers, it costs USD150 per flight for flights six hours or less, and USD250 for flights over six hours. For those that are transiting, then the combined price will apply. For extra comfort, passengers can purchase the adjacent seat in economy to place the pet carrier. However, for Business or First class, an extra seat must be purchased in advance.

Falcons are allowed on board too – passengers can travel with a falcon for free as part of their cabin baggage allowance, or as checked baggage for USD500 per cage. In Economy, guests are allowed to carry one falcon per person, or two falcons per additional seat, whereas in Business and First, two falcons per person are allowed. Please note that if you’d like to travel with a falcon on board, you will have to speak to Etihad in advance to make the booking.

Etihad’s checklist for traveling with animals in the cabin is as follows:

  • You have checked all entry and exit regulations for the countries you are flying to and from
  • All applicable veterinary examinations or treatments have been completed
  • You have asked your vet about any medication that may need to be administered to your pet during the journey
  • Have all the official documents required for your pet to travel
  • You have registered your pet for carriage in the cabin no later than 72 hours before your flight and have received confirmation of pet acceptance
  • Your pet is familiar with the travel bag or kennel
  • You have a lead and a suitable harness or collar available
  • You have dry pet food in a sealed container in your cabin baggage
