For Fall/Winter 2015, Emirati designer Fatema Fardan unveils a delicious collection that perfectly blends the feminine, the femme fatale, and the tomboy. This collision of elements is sublimely balanced by a rich palette of burgundy, taupe, forest green, and lavender, as well as luxe materials like leather and velvet.
“The Fall/Winter 2015 collection called ‘Refined Folk’ tells a story about connecting our past with our future,” Fardan shares in an exclusive interview with Savoir Flair. “It’s here to question what our past is, what our future is to become, and how they are related and will intertwine. It seeks to inflict an emotional and spiritual connection in a way that is not contrived.” It’s certainly easy to connect with the effortless glamour of the collection, with its leather sheath dresses, geometric pencil skirts, and printed maxis, but there are also moments that delight in unexpected ways, like when a simple dress is revealed to have a surprising V-shaped cutout trimmed with lapels at the back. Romance is also alive and well thanks to a series of velvet gowns, princess-cut dresses, and more.
“The main objective was to create a feel that was strong, but also softer, prettier; a ‘modern folk’ feel,” Fardan explains. “It’s an exploration to see how our clothing can mimic the way we want to live our lives, holding on to traditions, but not being constrained by them as well.” With embroidered details providing the “folk” element and elegantly tailored silhouettes providing the “modern”, it’s clear that Fardan met her goals with this collection.
