Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
“I was born and raised in Iraq, and moved around to various countries after that. I completed my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture in Canada. The diverse cultural and social backgrounds really influenced my architectural design projects and artistic works. Since then, I’ve participated in a number of international art exhibitions, architectural competitions, and helped plan and manage a number of social fundraising events to support global charity causes.”

Was designing accessories something you’ve always dreamt of doing?
“I’ve always aimed to achieve a balance between the impact of art and utilizing it through design. The more our daily lives become busy and the more we are more exposed to global influences, the more impactful the artistic expressions become. Such beneficial impacts should not be limited to viewing art on walls, but should extend to our daily use and visual appearances. By designing accessories, this balance is being achieved.”

It’s great to see regional designers incorporating their heritage into their pieces. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your designs?
“I believe in the ability of artistic translations through the creative process. Every character, event, and experience processes through layers of visual and conceptual translations, reflecting the hidden appearance of what we see and take for granted. As a result, my artistic expressions are affected by poetry and people, as well as global events.”

Tell us about how you make your bags, scarves, and phone covers. Are they hand-painted or printed?
“All of our accessories are based on paintings that I’ve done in free calligraphy style, which are inspired by specific verses of Arabic poetry and characters. The art is then selected for each design and incorporated for the final product to create a statement piece with the intention to stand out. They are both printed and hand-painted, depending on the item.”

Are the accessories limited to a certain amount per design?
“The items are limited; a fixed quantity of each piece is made because of its artistic originality and exclusive design. [I think that] obtaining such accessories is like having pieces of art in alternate forms, and that should not be something that is mass-produced.”
