Disney’s Frozen is not a source of inspiration you would expect – but for Emirati designer Hamda Al Fahim it proved to be the very starting point of her collection. “A lot of the pieces have been inspired by the ice queen in the movie. She wears beautiful dresses in pale blue, and I wanted to create my own take on the dresses and bring them to life,” she explains to Savoir Flair. Other elements and interests that informed her designs included peacocks, the art of chinoiserie (noticeable in the heavy embellishment of certain gowns), and art – which resulted in a collaboration with two artists who hand-painted some of the dresses.
“It was my first time to try the concept of painting directly onto a dress, which to me beautifully combines art with fashion, and that fashion is inevitably wearable art,” she explains. Al Fahim also experimented with fabrics, like a white knit that “conforms and complements the female body”, alongside more familiar fabrics like tulle.
In this collection, you’ll find royal-blue, floor-sweeping gowns with backless designs, dreamy dresses scattered with delicate blossom appliqués, frothy wedding dresses made from acres of tulle and embroidery, periwinkle wrap-around gowns with gauzy chiffon trains, and much more.
