Who doesn’t have a #GirlCrush on Gigi Hadid? From her flawless beauty to effortless accessories style, the ‘Model of the Year’ has definitely earned her stripes as an international trendsetter. Savoir Flair has been tracking her on- and off-duty style, and last week we couldn’t help but notice a new black tote she was seen carrying to BFF Taylor Swift’s SoHo apartment. Enter: The new ‘Whitney Bag’, a sleek design by Max Mara and Renzo Piano, the architect behind New York City’s new Whitney Museum.
“This was a two-way collaboration, a complete meeting of minds,” Max Mara Creative Director Ian Griffith tells Savoir Flair exclusively. “I think that is reflected in the harmony of the finished object. Max Mara and Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) worked closely at every stage and, because of the closeness of our thinking, the design process was remarkably linear.”
The ‘Whitney’ is available in three sizes and colors (black, Bordeaux, and brown), and a limited edition of 250 numbered bags have been created in a light blue-grey leather, inspired by the museum’s façade.

An expert craftsman begins cutting out the shape of the bag from nappa leather.
A contrasting interior lining is carefully sewn to the bag’s leather panel.
Strips of leather, which will later form the bag’s straps and be used to create the ribbed exterior, are cut out and prepared.
Each strap is masterfully created and polished to ensure its durability.
A machine is used to create the ribbed sections on the exterior of the ‘Whitney’ bag.
Throughout the process, designers and artisans constantly work together to perfect the new bag.
