The end of Paris Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2016 saw sulking goth girls at Miu Miu trudging off to prep school in layered, oversized uniforms. Who are we kidding? They were dropped off in a limo. After all, the sky-high, glam-rock boots Miu Miu’s women sported were definitely not made for walking, and these girls would never risk an unforeseen rainstorm when wearing expensive stoles.
While the sheer frocks and tawdy slip dresses on other runways have been trying hard to #freethenipple, Miuccia Prada bucks the trend by layering her French-maid négligées over checkered frocks and striped button-ups. In fact, the entire collection was an exercise in contradictions, with tulle ballet skirts worn over bikini bottoms, fur accessories presented for the spring season, and twee gingham checks worn beneath somber velvet dresses, which were topped with fox stoles slung casually across the body. Even the slinkiest boudoir pieces were topped with big-shouldered, fully patterned car coats or vividly patterned sweaters. Additionally, there were a few extremely cool molded leather jackets and softer oxblood and navy leather styles that transformed the peacoat into the new must-have topper of the season. But oh how we wish that so many of the looks hadn’t come with raccoon-tail accessories. One of these days, cool-girl brands like Miu Miu will clue into the fact that their customers are far more interested in watching cute animal videos on Youtube than wearing the cute animals as accouterments.
