Fashion is at its most compelling when it is reinterpreting something familiar, whether that thing is nature, the night sky, or, in the case of Orkalia’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection, art for art’s sake. Dubai-based designer Orchid Ganji committed herself to a thorough explanation of the theme, arguing for the importance of form over function when it comes to fashionable adornment. As such, each piece in her new collection stands without explanation; either it will resonate with your personal sense of style or it will not. This is a simple and refreshing approach to fashion, where the designer is fully invested in the creation of a piece rather than a narrative backing that might attempt to explain its presence in your wardrobe. But it takes little convincing to be won over by her glittering, body-conscious dresses, flirtatious playsuits, or stylish asymmetrical dresses presented with evocative details, like slight cutouts at the neckline that reveal a slice of decolletage or tiny peplum accents.
