As the fall/winter season kicks off, Savoir Flair takes a look back at the hottest trends spotted on the runways to help inform your shopping and styling decisions. From moody gothic vibes to wallpaper prints galore, these are the seven trends you need to know.
You might see the word ‘baroque’ and think ‘gilded wallpaper prints’, but this trend couldn’t be further from the stuffy baroque styles of years past. Rich and opulent hand stitching and intricate details lend an air of delicacy to this updated trend.
The FW12 runways were awash with PVC leather, black widow silks, sinewy gowns, and molded leather separates. Embrace your dark side by incorporating a range of gothic-inspired pieces into you wardrobe, like elbow-length black gloves and flowing sheer dresses.
There’s a lot to be said for traveling in style, and the fashion industry’s barrage of luxurious travel-inspired looks has us itching to trot the globe. Embrace smart, clean ensembles like easy nautical separates seen on the Max Mara runway, elegant double-breasted coats from Louis Vuitton, or posh menswear layers from Ralph Lauren, and hop aboard a plane, train, or boat. This season, you’re seeing the world.
You may have only encountered such prints in 60s-inspired wallpaper but, this season, be prepared to see them everywhere. From boots and tights to skirts and coats, these familiar, almost nostalgic patterns are rendered modern in brighter and more eye-catching shapes.
New equestrian style sees traditional riding boots and jodhpurs accompanied by voluminous silhouettes, billowing capes, and exaggerated caps. Have fun with this one because it’s all about dressing up.
Princess of China
The intricate, patient opulence of oriental prints proved to be a provocative inspiration to many of the industry’s top designers this season. Sharp details, powerful bursts of color, and delicate embroidery contribute to the mysterious allure of the Oriental trend.
Back to the Future
With Curiosity now firmly planted on Mars, we can say with certainty that the future is already here. Fashion clued into this early on and has been supplying us with intergalactic, hypnotizing sci-fi trends for FW12. If it belongs in a William Gibson novel, it’s ‘in’ right now.
