You may know Ushi Sato as the stylish blogger behind TheShadesandScarf.com, but the Filipino native — who now calls Dubai home — is among an emerging crop of promising designers arising in the Middle East. In this exclusive first look at his debut collection for UshiSato, Savoir Flair readers are introduced to his passionate interest in pattern work and silhouette shaping. Right away, you’ll notice the repeated use of triangles in the collection, which Sato explains, saying, “For me, a woman is like a triangle. She can be acute, obtuse, right, equilateral, isosceles, or scalene. Her hypotenuse could be love, power, or danger. My ‘Triangle’ collection satisfies them all. The shape appeals to me the most as it symbolizes where the modern and the old meet – something that is very apparent in this collection. You will be able to see sharp cuts mixed with ladylike silhouettes.” Contemporary flare is certainly apparent throughout his work, as Sato blends unexpected details together, like kimono-sleeved silk organza tops with high-slit skirts or cutaway sleeveless tunics with gauzy boy shorts. When asked who he keeps in mind when designing, he responds, “A woman with character, like Tilda Swinton.”
