Superheros have multiple personas – journalists by day, saviors of humanity by night and that sort of thing – and it would seem that the same is true for the Superstylish too. Anum Bashir, of DesertMannequin.com fame, works at the Fire Station – Artist in Residence program under Qatar Museums by day, and blogs for a legion of loyal fans by night. She’s made a name for herself thanks to her energetic nature and a personal style that tends toward artistic, minimalist, and androgynous pieces with a preference for maximal accessories.

“I styled this look on a very chilly Doha day. As we all know, they’re hard to come by, so I wanted to layer up and enjoy a mix of dark, earthy fall/winter colors. The mink is very special to me as it was the first gift my husband ever bought for me at an adorable boutique in New Hope, Pennsylvania.”

Is there anything you once thought you’d never wear and now do?
Mom jeans! The higher the waistline, the better. My latest purchase was a pair of Maison Martin Margiela high-waisted jeans that look like something that danced their way out of the 90s.
Who are your greatest fashion influences?
Caroline De Maigret, Leandra Medine, Christine Centenera, and Jenna Lyons – to name just a few. Fashion has had way too many incredible women to narrow them down to a few favorites.
“This look is pretty much how I dress on a day-to-day basis. It sums up the Desert Mannequin style quite well with a laid-back, comfortable approach to trendy/ fashionable dressing. The shoes and brooch add that little touch of high fashion. The jacket is an absolute staple in my wardrobe.”

What inspires you to put on a fabulous outfit?
The people I’ll meet when I’m wearing it. I love to feel confident. Anticipating that feeling is enough to get me off the couch and changed into something fabulous.
What would your signature outfit be?
White jeans from Acne Studios, a white T-shirt, and my blue denim Acne Studios biker jacket. I would wear it every day if I could.
“Felt a bit retro today. I also wanted to see if I could pull off mom jeans. Luckily, Margiela makes the perfect pair. However, truth be told, the focal point of this look is the orange-hued croc backpack by Nancy Gonzalez. It’s such a show stopper!”

Are there any fashion items that you collect?
Handbags and shoes! They are my children until I actually have my own.
“I was going for a slightly more tailored and sophisticated look here, and the only way to accomplish that was by throwing this Céline jacket on top of a jumpsuit. Though it’s quite a few seasons old now, I still love this jacket a lot.”

Where do you generally like to shop?
If it’s not online then it’s a multi-brand store in Doha called Per Lei Couture. It stocks some of my favorite designers and I almost always find something to walk out with.
“Mugler can be quite expensive, but, when I found this beauty for 50 percent off, it was a no brainer! I’m really loving military green at the moment, so these pants from Zara‘s latest collection, paired with a black jacket and bordeaux-hued Tabitha Simmons, just work. This look incorporates classic Desert Mannequin style cues: androgyny, something a little oversized, a killer pair of heels, and always, always a good jacket.”
How would you describe your personal style in three words?
Androgynous, minimalist, and laidback.
“When it comes to Balmain, downplay everything else you plan to wear with it. Except the shoes of course! I wanted to have fun with color, so this was the result. And yes, I do realize that I wear some form of denim every day.”
How has your personal style evolved over the years?
The style approach I often take is less is more. With shoes and handbags, it’s go big or go home! I’m definitely not averse to sartorial risks, but, if you’re going to take them, be wise!
“Zayan‘s rafia skirt is so much fun! I’m not huge on skirts usually, but this one felt right at home in my wardrobe. Paired with my husband’s shirt and some fun sneakers, this is a good “on the run” look. Oh, and don’t forget a good red lip. I frequently enjoy a shade by NARS called ‘Red Box’.”
Does your style reflect your personality?
I lived in Manhattan for a few years, where the whole normcore thing started about six years ago. I love when girls who look incredibly put together make it look effortless. It’s just so cool. I’m quite an extrovert, which reflects in how I dress.
