Taller Marmo’s Riccardo Audisio and Yago Goicoechea are two of the hardest working young designers this editor’s ever come across. And yet in spite of that it seemed like all their hard work, meticulousness, and dedication just wasn’t quite paying off – but all that changed this summer, when the duo unveiled its Spring/Summer 2015 collection in Milan and later to its Middle Eastern audience at Fashion Forward Season 4.
This latest collection speaks to the elegance of a bygone area, referencing Middle Eastern style icons the likes of Farah Diba, the wife of the former Shah of Iran. When Savoir Flair spoke to Audisio and Goicoechea, they divulged the details of the inspiration behind their collection, stating, “We were looking for time periods when occidental culture and oriental cultures were interested in each other, so the early 1900s and the whole Marchesa Luisa Casati relationship with orientalist designers Paul Poiret and Mariano Fortuny. We were also inspired by 1970s pre-revolution Iran with style references from Farah Diba and pop singer Googoosh.”
The 1970s can be felt in their sultry monochrome outfits imbued with lanky, languid retro flare, while the 1900s are present in lace, button, and brocade details. Indeed the young duo carried out their cross-cultural exercise on the back of exceptional fabrics, which ranged from printed sequins and iridescent, double-sided sequins to macramé lace, and which demonstrated both their technical talent and design acumen.
The Dubai-based label also celebrated the resort nature of the city by introducing swimwear to its offering for the first time. The designers tell us, “Culturally speaking, we always think about what we can do to help the development of the Dubai fashion identity and, with the city being a resort destination, we decided to give the collection a resort vibe by including light-weight kaftans and swimsuits. We were very happy that our retailers showed interest in them.” Truly, it would seem like the duo has struck commercial gold with this collection, and they would do well to continue down this newfound path in upcoming seasons.
