“High school was simply beautiful and full of the right experiences, including making friends who, until today, I consider as family. I would love to go back and relive it.” That’s how House of Nomad’s Saleh Al-Banna remembers his high-school experience, and perhaps that explains why the Dubai-based brand’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection draws so heavily on varsity style. His co-founder, Ahmed El-Sayed, shares a similar nostalgia and fondness for his last years in school. “My high school was a British private school, so things were pretty strict, but the experience with friends was fantastic,” he revealed to Savoir Flair.
For the forthcoming season, the design duo drew on their own experiences to put a fashionable spin on varsity style with a new presentation that celebrates athleticwear for both day and night. When Savoir Flair spoke to Al-Banna about the inspiration behind the collection, he shared, “We wanted to carry through some looks from previous collections and give them a strong, solid theme. It’s all about the young generation when it comes to sport-luxe fashion, so we wanted to highlight that by producing a collection based on high-school and, more specifically, athletics class.”
They accomplished the look of their collection by using neoprene, which added a sleek, modern quality to their luxe track jackets, cheerleader skirts, and basketball tops. Although the repeated use of neoprene posed a design challenge, El-Sayed and Al-Banna deftly persuaded the spongy fabric to transform into gorgeous shapes that didn’t compromise the energetic, youthful aesthetic of the clothes.
