For Spring/Summer 2015, Lulwa Al Amin taps Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverston) as her muse. Although Cher Horowitz from the 1995 film Clueless argued that she had a “way normal life for a teenage girl”, her virtual closet and impeccable style begged to differ. The 90s may have been dominated by the grunge movement, but Cher stood out as a singular cultural icon, and we’ve never stopped wanting to be her, wanting to dress like her, or valuing her wisdom on everything from boys to footwear.
“One evening, I was watching Clueless and I remembered how popular the movie was when I was growing up. All the girls wanted to dress like Alicia Silverstone, and so I was inspired to bring back this fantasy and turn it into a 2015 reality,” shared Al Amin. She evolved Cher’s 90s ensembles for the modern day with a variety of cheeky prints and extended the hemline on her beloved miniskirt. The results are colorful, youthful, and fresh – although comfortably familiar.
Prints are a standout theme in the collection, and Al Amin shares insight into their development, stating, “The prints are a combination of all inspirations: cakes, swans, hearts, glitters, cherries, and payphones. I also wanted to include a print that would neutralize the looks together, so I created an imitation broderie anglaise print. From a distance, it looks like an actual broderie anglaise fabric, and up close you realize it’s a print.”
