Hedi Slimane might not be much of an innovator, as fashion critics are quick to point out, but he knows how to give his patrons exactly what they want. While some might frown on the direction he’s taken the Saint Laurent brand in, the retail numbers don’t lie, and neither does the A-list clamoring for his slick, sexed-up rock ‘n’ roll fare. He’s nailing a deep-seeded desire for youthful glamour, and Spring/Summer 2015 regurgitates more of the same.
Hemlines were predictably brief and accents ran the gamut from sequined and sparkly to polka dotted and furry. References were a grab bag from the past: Western style was represented with flat top hats, leather cowgirl jackets, and shrunken suede blazers, while glam rock was represented by diagonally striped sequined jackets, sequined tops, and tiny leather shorts. Slimane was on a roll, showing everything from military-inspired camo jackets to disco frocks, which he sexed up with skinny scarves, smart chapeaus, and platform sandals. At this stage in Slimane’s career, he’s treading a well-worn groove. It may spell predictability on his runway, but when your aesthetic is as acutely defined and imminently desirable as his, you can get away with bucking the status quo and doing your own thing.
