According to the hive-mind that is the Internet, there is one thing that binds all hipsters together and that is a love of irony. It makes ironic sense then, that a label bearing a name associated with an unsavory skin condition, would pave the way for all things cool. Acne Studios is a reigning favorite among those who favor monochrome palettes, oversized fits, and flat-footed unfussiness, and is championed by both the Instagram-famous and the Tumblr crowd. So, it comes as a little bit of a shock that Acne designer Jonny Johansson would turn his attention to preppy luxury for Spring/Summer 2015. If the hipsters don’t decamp after this outing, the label stands a strong chance at moving into a new realm of consumer interest.
Starchy pleat-front trousers in a “boring” shade of khaki signal the new direction instantly, as do the many floral coordinated separates and plunge-front vests and tunics. These looks trade in Williamsburg for the Hamptons, with a kind of tongue-in-cheek nod to the monied and the well-heeled. However, Acne’s safari jackets in mustard and scarlet possess timeless appeal, and sporty anoraks are desirable to anyone who wants to look stylish and pragmatic in the face of spring’s mercurial weather patterns. Slim cut-out dresses in figure-hugging fits are a little harder to sell without the aid of undergarments, as they are incredibly revealing. Skip the caviar and champagne because these looks don’t forgive imperfection. As for irony, Johansson dishes it up at the end by closing the show with a teal terrycloth towel, for those moments when you forget to get dressed after your shower.
