The provocative encounters the minimal on Alexis Mabille’s runway, advanced by an athleticwear message that added gravitas to the flesh parade. Spring/Summer 2015 saw a paring back – of hemlines, of necklines, and of fabrics.
It takes something of a magic touch to transform something from the repressive Edwardian era and make it look positively risqué, but Mabille was up to the challenge. He had no qualms about matching a dandy high-necked blouse with the briefest of silk shorts, or showing looks comprised only of sparkly underthings and net overlay. Although there were plenty of sequined gold bikinis and transparent mesh dresses, Mabille counterbalanced their lingerie qualities with sensible basics, like monochrome separates and nude waterfall skirts. Sporty hooded looks were destined to be this collection’s bestsellers, especially his navy sweater with mesh hood. Silk boxing jackets and track pants also built on the athletic foundation of the presentation, with one particularly fun gold-sequined boxing look near the end that practically stole the show. It looks like we’ll have to get in the ring and throw a punch or two to get fit in time to wear Mabille’s body-conscious collection this spring.
