Tom Ford’s calling card is a slicked up view of sex tauted on extravagant pieces with a sky-high price tag to match. For Spring/Summer 2015, the provocative designer takes perverse pleasure in pushing our buttons. There’s a reason that pasties were the most talked-about element of his presentation. We weren’t expecting them, but we should have.
Dark glamour led the show, with lean suit separates in jet black worn over lacquered mesh minis and sheer paneled dresses. The way the looks were styled was a little edgy, sure, but worn with more solid foundations, they could actually be workwear appropriate. Ford quickly bored of easy looks, and transitioned to glam rock style with toppers made from allover sequins and flared pants made from a glossy pewter fabric. Bruised brocade shows up on suits and mini skirts, while shiny trousers offer up a great abstract print that crackled with black contrast detail. Ford’s sheer slip dresses call for the aforementioned pasties, which covered up some of the bosom but not by much. The best look emerged near the end of the show in the form of a glittering, coal black ensemble topped with a matching cape that whipped wickedly in the wind. It’s surprising how sexy this fully-covered outfit is after all of Ford’s flesh-baring silhouettes. There could be some clues here for Ford, who has yet to understand that the less revealing something is, the more mystery it carries.
