‘Urban chic’ might as well be Donna Karan’s middle name. “New York is my palette, my passion, my fuel – a culture that empowers creativity,” her Spring 2015 show notes declared.
And how did that translate into clothes? There were two predominant motifs: swirls of graffiti, plus sexy, structured, day-to-night bras. Take for instance, look 1, a black silk stretch organza bra paired with an ivory black brushstroke cotton pleated skirt. “The bra is the new bodysuit,” the designer declared. And so, Karan showed multiple riffs on this concept, such as look 36, a hand embroidered and stretch organza scribble number paired with black linen trousers, as well as look 11, a flame red nylon stretch organza bra paired with a tweed cardigan and skirt.
In addition to the designer’s seductive bra-lets, there was mad hatter-inspired headwear that we imagine was intended to throw a bit of fun into an otherwise decidedly serious Spring 2015 mix. Although we appreciate the creativity, we might have preferred if Karan saved these hats for Alice’s wonderland as opposed to the streets of Manhattan.
