When Luella Bartley stopped designing for her namesake label in 2009, the fashion industry waited with bated breath to see what she would do next, and when news got out that she was now at the design helm of Marc by Marc Jacobs, we all breathed a collective sigh of relief knowing that she would once again be creating. In her first interview for the brand, revealed exclusively to Savoir Flair, Bartley and Katie Hillier, her co-designer at MBMJ, discuss their first collection for the brand.
In the video below, Bartley explains that her new role as Design Director had her considering the Marc Jacobs girl – who she was, who she is, and how she “needed to get some attitude back”. The designers worked together to tell a story with the collection that reflected the new MBMJ girl and her irreverent attitude. They cultivated the story by creating “individual characters with each of the outfits” and matching the outfits to the personality of the girls that they cast in the show.
Watch the video above for a rare insight into the minds of Hillier and Bartley and to discover MBMJ’s new direction.
