In the video below, Karl Lagerfeld shares his personal thoughts regarding Chanel Cruise 2015 show, which recently took place on The Island in Dubai. In his words, he took from Oriental fashion what he thinks is “sexy and timeless, and made a modern look for women all over the world.” The timing of the collection was intentional and illuminated Lagerfeld’s globally minded philosophy of fashion. “It was time for an Oriental revival, because the Orient becomes more and more important in the history of the 21st century,” he shared. Just a few short years ago, this type of audacious design would have been “impossible”.

Lagerfeld’s intent with Cruise 2015 was to mix together the Old World and the New World, with respect to cultural codes and styles of dress. However, not only do the Old and New come together in Chanel’s Cruise 2015 collection, but also the fashions of the East and the West. His prints were inspired by Arabian tiles from 11th- and 12th-century Spain, and in Lagerfeld’s capable hands the look is transformed from ancient to current. Watch the interview video above for more personal musings from the mind of a 21st-century fashion genius, and you will gain a better understanding of Lagerfeld’s “flexible version of Chanel”.
