For decades, the creative geniuses at Cartier have often drawn inspiration from some of the most mundane things, thus building bridges between the ordinary and the extraordinary. Armed with its creative vision and endless curiosity to explore the unexpected, Cartier has proven time and again that beauty really does lie in the eye of the beholder.
Known for seeking inspiration from the inexhaustible vocabulary of nature, Cartier’s latest ‘Grain de Café’ collection has the humble coffee bean at its heart. “‘Grain de Café’ is Cartier’s new figurative collection; it’s the freedom to surpass literal creative execution and develop a multi-sensory architecture,” said Marie-Laure Cérède, Jewelry and Watchmaking Creative Director at Cartier.
While a coffee bean might seem like an unusual motif for a luxury jeweler, it is not Cartier’s first time working with the bean. The coffee bean motif first appeared in 1938 under the Creative Direction of Jeanne Toussaint. Despite its miniature dimensions, the bean was tremendously appreciated by Cartier’s clientele, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s.
Plucking it out of the wild, the Cartier ‘Grain de Café’ collection transforms the coffee bean’s full, round, and robust shape into opulent golden jewels. The meticulous placement of the precious diamond-sprinkled coffee beans on a dual-colored gold chain results in the crown-like design of rings, bracelets, and necklaces. An ultra-chic version in rose gold features a ring and a necklace, and a version with obsidian alternated with gold and dotted with diamonds is also available.
Cérède further adds, “’Grain de Café’ introduces a new preciousness by elevating a single material, gold, and playing with light, finishes, and volume to create an acoustic collection brimming with soul.”
A shining testimony to Cartier’s savoir-faire in bringing the creations to life, the maison’s ateliers focused on one goal: linking research, movement, mastery of volumes, and gold work to create the most exquisite jewelry pieces — and that they did.
The skilled hands in Cartier’s workshops were tasked with perfecting the shape and movement of the motif as it wrapped itself around the gold chains. Playing with various dimensions and compositions, Cartier’s impressive coffee beans are crafted from gold and garnished with diamonds or colored stones, and sometimes even half-paved.
