There was a time when Taylor Tomasi Hill was the most photographed woman in the fashion industry. Her signature flame-red hair and ability to turn a simple floral frock into an industry-changing statement have made her a favorite of the street style scene for years. After a two-year stint with online pre-tailer Moda Operandi, where she acted as Creative Director and is responsible for the retailer’s celebrated edit, she announced her shocking departure in October of last year. Following months of speculation over what her next move would be, Tomasi Hill dropped the first hint last week in the form of a new Instagram account, @TTHBlooms.
In a rare interview, she shares with us the story behind her new flower concept and talks life after Moda Operandi.
When you left Moda Operandi, did you know this was the route you’d be pursuing?
When I left M’O, I had no idea what was in my future. I just knew it was time to focus on my family, reflect, and get inspired.
How did you come up with the idea to start TTHBlooms? Was it a lifetime dream of yours?
TTHBlooms was an organic venture that bloomed on its own. The minute I became a free agent, I had daily meetings and wanted to thank everyone with something personal. I live in Chelsea so the flower market is basically my backyard. I started arranging my own personal blooms and dropping them around the city. The next thing I know, enquiring minds wanted the details of my local florist. From that point on, I came clean and told everyone I was for hire! It’s a great side gig as I am obsessed with blooms, so it’s become one of my passion projects.
Does this mean you’ve left the fashion industry for good or will you still be consulting on the side?
Never say never, but as of now I will go on record and say that I will never completely disappear from the fashion landscape that I love so dearly. I’m so thankful I fell into an industry that keeps me inspired and literally jumping out of bed each morning.
Tell us a bit about your new business.
TTHBlooms is focused on events as of now. My blooms are one size only, miniature, and are packed full of beauties. I’m not equipped to handle the one-off arrangement here and there – unless a close friend comes a calling.
I’m sure our readers would love to know how they can get their hands on some of your arrangements. Will you be shipping internationally?
Sorry ladies, I won’t be shipping internationally, but if you plan on coming to the States I can meet you anywhere. I’m also starting wedding blooms, which will include international clients, so if you are looking for anything from a bouquet to full-on wedding blooms I’m here for you, and I travel well.
