Following from Oxfam’s Second Hand September initiative, which urges shoppers to say no to new clothes for 30 days to reduce our impact on the planet, it is important to carry the lessons we learned about shopping ethically over to the rest of the year as well.

According to figures from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for example, it takes 3,781 liters of water to make a pair of jeans, from the production of the cotton to the delivery of the final product to the store. If that is for just one pair of jeans, imagine the environmental cost for everything in our wardrobes. One way to reduce our environmental footprint is to shop second-hand, and the numbers don’t lie. It is estimated that with about 600 kilos of used clothes, there will be a reduction of 2250 kilos of CO2 emissions, 3.6 billion liters of water saved, and 144 trees planted. Although thrift stores aren’t as popular in the UAE as in North America or Europe, they are starting to grow in popularity right here in Dubai, and these are our faves.

ThriftforGood

Located at Golden Mile 8 on The Palm, ThriftforGood is a second-hand social enterprise that exists to do good. It has partnered with Gulf For Good, which helps children around the world through health, education, and housing. The shop donates 100% of its profits to the organization. ThriftforGood also hosts workshops that encourage eco-friendly practices such as composting, tie-dye with natural dyes, and candle making.

The Luxury Closet

Founded in 2011, The Luxury Closet is a leading online boutique for buying and selling new and pre-loved luxury items like handbags, clothes, watches, and jewelry. Each item is officially authenticated before being listed on the site, which delivers globally and includes brands such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Cartier, which generally rarely (if ever) go on sale at discounted prices.

RETOLD

With two huge storefronts, one in Al Quoz and one at Al Ghurair Centre, RETOLD is the ultimate second-hand shopping destination. Selling items from AED15 to AED150 only, not only are you helping preserve the planet, but you are also helping preserve your wallet. You can shop from infinite high-street brands guilt-free, knowing you are keeping fast fashion items out of landfills.

RELUXABLE

RELUXABLE is a black-owned and female-founded online market platform based in Dubai which brings together the finest luxury pre-loved and second-hand retailers to one place. The platform allows users to browse through products from several verified luxury secondhand retailers, such as Collector Square, The Luxury Closet, and Luxury Garage Sale, reducing the number of online destinations required to find the piece you’re looking for.

Thrift Bazaar

One of the OG Dubai thrift stores is Thrift Bazaar, which has been around since before thrifting was cool. It literally has everything you can imagine, and the pieces are all in great condition. It will take some digging through their condensed clothing racks to find what you’re looking for, but that’s the excitement of thrift shopping. It’s all about the chase.

digg

Dubai’s first official online thrift store, digg, is more than just a store. What I really love about digg is that the team also hosts events like their ‘Open Graffiti Jam’ with live graffiti, music, karak and thrifting, bringing the community together in an environment that is rare to find in Dubai.

Vintage Vibe

Vintage Vibe is the first second-hand store I shopped from here and has now become the cool kids’ favorite second-hand destination. The store hosts auctions on Instagram live on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and always makes an appearance at Dubai’s coolest pop-ups.

Fashion Rerun

Fashion Rerun’s online store hosts a wide selection of gently used clothing and accessories for everyone. Contrary to traditional Western thrift stores that have massive selections with few viable options, taking you hours of sorting to find an item you would actually buy, Fashion Rerun has a plethora of great options and is one to keep on your radar, especially when it appears at pop-ups like Ripe Market and Urban Market.
