Just a couple of weeks ago, we had our eyes glued to the television as we followed the Wimbledon 2021 games. “It” girls, however, have been obsessing over the tennis aesthetic – particularly the humble tennis skirt – for a while now. A quick scroll through our Instagram feeds, and it’s evident: fashion girls are serving (pun intended) some seriously glamorous looks in tennis skirts. Kendal Jenner – who is endorsing Alo Yoga – is a massive fan of the sporty style. In fact, an Instagram post by the supermodel wearing Alo Yoga‘s tennis skirt spiked searches for the brand by a whopping 328% in 48 hours, according to Lyst.
In June 2020, Lyst reported a 33% increase in the demand for pleated white tennis skirts, with Nike‘s ‘Court Victory’ tennis skirt being the most popular style. Nike’s tennis skirt also ranked 10th in Lyst’s second-quarter index of 2020 of the hottest womenswear products. Fast forward a year, and the demand for tennis-inspired pieces has only shot up. In May 2021, Lyst identified a threefold increase in the page views for tennis skirts compared to the same time last year, which begs the question: how did the tennis skirt emerge as such a winner off the court?
Fashion is cyclic and, more often than not, evolutionary. This means there is always a little trail that can guide you back to the source of the trend. The tennis skirt, however, owes its fame to several factors. This is hardly the first time fashion has obsessed over adorable pleated skirts. Box pleated mini skirts were a huge trend in the noughties, popularized by celebrities like Rihanna and iconic teen drama movies like Mean Girls and Princess Diaries. If you haven’t already heard, we’ve got some news for you: trends from the aughts – the (somewhat) questionable ones included – are making a comeback.
Speaking of teen dramas, we can hardly ignore the impact of the award-winning tv series, Euphoria when it comes to the tennis skirt trend. On the show, Hunter Schafer‘s character, Jules, boasts a vast collection of pastel-colored tennis skirts. Could there be a connection? We think yes. The popular show has already inspired some seriously bold beauty looks, and it may have sneakily been influencing our closets as well.

While the tennis skirt trend has gained a lot more traction this year compared to last year, whether or not it has peaked remains unclear. The pleated skirt aesthetic is also associated with school uniforms are cheerleader costumes. As children across the globe gear up to return to physical classrooms after over a year of e-learning, we will have to patiently wait and watch whether the ‘back to school’ season further pushes the trend to a new high.
