In breaking news, Maje and Sandro announce the opening of dual stand-alone stores in Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates on February 14, 2014. Maje and Sandro, owned independently by two sisters, have orbited alongside each other since the beginning. Moroccan-born designer Evelyn Chetrite founded Sandro in 1984, and developed the brand alongside her younger sister Judith Milgrom for 12 years before Milgrom split off to open Maje. This year, American private equity group Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) acquired a majority stake in both the Maje and Sandro brands, which operated under an umbrella group called SMCP (Sandro, Sandro Men, Maje, and Claudie Pierlot).
Both Maje and Sandro represent an accessible and feminine take on affordable luxury, making them key to the fashion sector in Europe and abroad. In 2013, SMCP group opened 150 stores worldwide. While the brands have made a first step into the market through department stores, this will be their first stand-alone stores in the region. This tale of two sisters is an exciting moment in Middle East female entrepreneurship.
