Move over skinny jeans — you have been canceled. The long-standing reign of the iconic skinny denim has come to an end. For the uninitiated, Gen Z has declared skinny jeans (among other things, like the side hair parting and the laughing-crying emoji) as uncool. Making us wonder: Does this young cohort hold the power to dictate trends? Or are they simply using their voice to shout out what can simply be regarded as a changing fashion cycle?
The kids of Gen Z, digital natives that they are, sure possess the most powerful voice at the moment. But can they use it to disrupt trend cycles? While the verdict is still not out, the TikTok-resident generation is responsible for birthing new trend cycles altogether.
As far as skinny jeans are concerned, the style was long dead before Gen Z called it out. If anything, it’s the pandemic (and the resulting comfort-first attitude) that is to be credited for dethroning the denim style. On the flip side, we can’t help but wonder — did the pandemic only accelerate the inevitable death of our beloved skinny jeans?
While arguments can be made to suit either side of the debate, we believe, Gen Z, Millennials, and well, everybody else, can agree on one thing: skinny jeans are uncomfortable. Not only are skinny jeans extremely uncomfortable for those who do manage to wriggle into them, but the body-hugging denim style is hardly inclusive. It comes as no surprise then that the flag bearers of diversity, inclusivity, and acceptance are discarding the style. Leaving us with the question: what do we replace skinny jeans with?
