It’s 2021, and sneakers have officially achieved the impossible. They’ve made their way from sweaty gym floors right onto the glamorous fashion week runways. The footwear style, which was essentially limited to sports, has wriggled itself into the center of the fashion circuit to such an extent that it’s impossible to even imagine our wardrobes sans sneakers. The reasons are obvious. They’re cool, comfy, and go with virtually any outfit.
In a day and age where night outs and parties are (almost) non-existent, high heels are on sabbatical, and comfort has taken center stage, sneakers are even more relevant than they have ever been. While we retain an affinity to athletic brands, luxury offerings have increased the ability to seriously upgrade your sneaker game. Heritage brands like Dior, JimmyChoo, and Prada setting foot into the sneaker realm is the biggest testimony of the bridging gap between luxury and streetwear. Last year, in an iconic collaboration with Nike, Dior dropped the covetable Dior ‘Air Jordan’ sneakers. Recently, luxury shoe giant Jimmy Choo released a range of crescent printed shoes – including sneakers – in collaboration with cult brand MarineSerre. Another cult favorite, Khaite has also collaborated with Adidas on a sneaker range. These high-low collabs are yet another reason to consider adding a fresh pair of kicks to your wardrobe in 2021.
