There is something happening in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and it has nothing to do with politics. The energy coming out of the country right now is astonishing. The music, fashion, and art in cities like Jeddah and Riyadh is exploding in new directions, thanks to a youth movement that is shaking the foundations of culture, causing seismic shocks to ripple through the rest of the region. Credit these tremendous changes to the fact that 51% of the population in KSA is below the age of 25 right now; a full half of the country belongs to the kids.
Usually fashion is at the forefront of such movements, but right now the industry is racing just to keep up. Everyone is shooting, producing, and creating in KSA right now, thanks in large part to its incredibly talented pool of photographers, stylists, and creative directors. In this exclusive shoot with MATCHESFASHION, photographer Muhanad (of Designlesss) and stylist Latifa Bint Saad collaborated to create an incredible editorial that effortlessly and colorfully blends the realms of fashion and beauty.
The vivid backdrop came from a desire by both Latifa and Muhannad to explore gradient backdrops. “We wanted it to project a different vibe and aesthetic compared to past collaborations we’ve done together. For me it was the exaggeration of color, texture, and shape,” the talented stylist shares. But, they were savvy enough to know how to execute a shoot that relied on vibrant makeup hues, bold clothes from the Fall/Winter 2020 collections, and a bright backdrop. “Working on this shoot, we focused on exploring the texture of the clothes with the colorful backgrounds — which might seem like a bold move, but it was treated in a soft way and treated as a secondary element while focusing on the beauty of the subject,” Muhannad shares.
Matches Fashion trusted the Saudi-based team’s vision, and it paid off. The results are eye-catching, whimsical, and delightful to the eye, perfectly capturing the energy of a country that has become a powerful force in fashion and beauty in 2020.
