It’s been more than two decades since the tragic death of the Princess of Wales. Yet, her iconic style continues to provide sartorial inspiration for not only her daughters-in-law but the fashion industry as a whole. Remember Off-White’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection inspired by the late Princess’s style? The fashion universe is now embracing a major 80s trend – one of Princess Diana‘s favorites – for fall Fall/Winter 2020. Oversized collars, or as Gen Z prefers to call it, ‘Big Collar Energy‘, is the fashion trend du jour.
The release of The Crown‘s fourth season has undeniably ushered in a heightened interest in Princess Diana’s life and, of course, her style. As we binge-watched the royal drama and endlessly scrolled the internet in awe of her beauty, we couldn’t help but notice the late royal’s love for the exaggerated collar trend.
Throughout her early years as a royal, the Princess put on an incredible show of the trend, which has now made a huge comeback. Several of Diana’s shirts, dresses, and even coats were adorned with super-sized collars taking up different shapes. From large peter pans, bow tie, and pie-crust collars to oversized scalloped and Chelsea collars, the Princess of Wales clearly loved showing off an exaggerated frill. Paparazzi lenses captured Diana in oversized collar looks throughout her tour of Australia and New Zealand with Prince Charles in 1983.
The trend has not only made a comeback, but it has also already made its way into the royal wardrobe of the Duchess of Cambridge. After a season of chic summer dresses, Kate Middleton sported a very on-trend Peter Pan collar for a virtual meeting with Armed Forces families. The duchess paired a white Ghost London blouse with a scalloped peter pan collar with black trousers and pearl drop earrings.
