Shoe trends come and go, but some pairs are so iconic that they become part of fashion history. Some will fill you with nostalgia, while others will likely have you internally cringing that you ever left the house wearing them. Either way, we’re just thankful comfy sneakers are still firmly in fashion right now. Take a trip down sartorial memory lane with our round-up of the “It” shoes that dominated the last 10 years.

Valentino 'Rockstuds'

Released in 2010, Valentino’s studded heels (and the flat pump versions) became a firm favorite with the blogging crowd. After a brief time gathering dust at the back of everyone’s shoe racks, they experienced a recent comeback when a new version of the signature shoe appeared once again in Valentino’s Spring/Summer 2021 runway.

Isabel Marant Wedge Trainers

Is it a wedge boot? Is it a sneaker? Who knows, but the fashion world went mad for Isabel Marant’s ‘Bekett’ wedge trainers when celebrities like Beyoncé and Miranda Kerr were photographed wearing them. Unfortunately, the shoes quickly fell out of fashion when the high street jumped on the trend and produced cheap imitations. In fact, in an interview with Footwear News, Marant herself said that the flood of “super ugly” copies of her iconic shoe silhouette meant she couldn’t wear them anymore.

Balenciaga 'Ceinture' Ankle Boots

Former creative director Nicolas Ghesquière started a footwear revolution when he released Balenciaga’s buckled ‘Ceinture’ boots. The sellout shoe featured cutout ankles, heavy-duty buckles, and chunky soles. Back at the start of the decade, we wore the style with black pleather leggings or denim cutoff shorts.

Chloé 'Susanna' Boots

Ah, Chloé‘s studded western boots. The shoes that graced a thousand Coachella attendees and Sienna Miller wannabes. Technically, these boots were originally released in 2008, but had a second wind when they were re-released in 2012. Even though every high street store did their own take, none of them could quite match up to the original.

Stella McCartney 'Star Elyse' Platforms

Stella McCartney’s celestial ‘Elyse’ shoes became the footwear of choice for the Fashion Week crowd after they were introduced on the Fall/Winter 2014 runway. The unusual brogue-style shoes notably feature an 8cm saw-edged wedge made from recycled, vegan materials.

Adidas 'Stan Smiths'

Who hasn’t been persuaded to buy a pair of minimal white sneakers in recent years? Whether you opted for a designer or high-street iteration, the shoes that undoubtedly kicked off the ‘white trainer’ trend were Adidas’ ‘Stan Smiths. Named after the famous tennis player, the trainers were first launched in 1963 but caught the attention of fashion editors across the globe when they were re-released in 2014.

Yeezy 'Boost 350s'

Kanye West’s first shoe collab with Adidas was a sellout hit in 2015 and continues to be top of the collectors’ list for many sneakerheads. The Yeezy ‘Boost 350s’ are a bonafide streetwear staple, thanks to their comfortable prime knit upper and squishy soles.

Gucci 'Princetown' Loafers

Gucci’s ‘Horsebit’ loafers first hit our Instagram feeds in 2015 and have been the slip-on option of choice for fashionable women ever since. However, the fur-lined versions of the shoe caused controversy when they launched, as animal rights activists questioned the ethics of using kangaroo fur to create the shoe’s signature furry innersole.

Balenciaga 'Triple S' Trainers

The dad sneaker trend reared its intentionally ugly head in 2017, which is when Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia launched the brand’s ‘Triple S’ shoe. Love it or hate it, the chunky trainer quickly became a solid must-have among celebrities, Instagrammers, and fashion influencers alike.

Balenciaga Sock Boot

Proving it knows how to start a shoe trend, Balenciaga’s spandex sock boots became a hit in 2018, but continue to be worn by some of the world’s most stylish women, like Hailey Bieber, Rihanna, and Kendall Jenner. Over the past few seasons, Bottega Veneta’s square-toe sandals, Prada’s heeled loafers, and Chanel’s ‘dad’ sandals have reigned supreme. But whether they’ll stick around and withstand the test of time? We’ll just have to wait and see.
