Once the preserve of pilgrims and little girls dressed up for birthday parties, oversize collars are the latest unexpected item being embraced by the fashion pack, sparking a major fall trend: Big Collar Energy. The term was originally coined in 2019 (inspired by a risqué phrase used to describe Ariana Grande’s ex-fiancé Pete Davidson), but it’s gone global this season, gaining momentum thanks to the ‘dressing from the waist up’ approach many of us have had to adopt while spending hours on video calls every week.
Chanel was one of the first designer brands to go big on super-sized necklines with its haute couture collections (later seen on Tilda Swinton at the Venice Film Festival). It was influential Danish label Ganni that brought Big Collar Energy to the masses, however. Instagram influencers couldn’t get enough of the brand’s cotton blouses with frilly-edged collars, produced in a variety of colors.

So, how do you get the BCE look? The great thing about this trend is it’s super easy to style. All you have to do is pop one on with your favorite pair of jeans – or joggers if you’re on a Zoom call – no accessorizing necessary.
