At this time of year, we’d usually be perusing the accessories on the Fall/Winter runways and looking ahead to the glitzy bags we’ll be toting around during the festive season. This year, however, with many of us still working from home and doing a lot less socializing than we’re used to, our handbag needs are of the more practical variety – but you can still have some fun with styling if you’d like.
Fall calls for no-nonsense bags that are chic and versatile, and luckily there were plenty of those on the Fall/Winter 2020 runways. Here are four of the biggest bag trends of the season.
Mini Bags
The trend for tiny totes continued on the Fall/Winter runways, with mini top handle purses seen at Jacquemus, Fendi, Chanel, and Oscar de la Renta.
While some of these designer accessories were so minuscule they’ll barely hold a credit card, you’ll find mini totes perfectly sized to fit your phone, purse, face mask, and hand sanitizer, and with an extra cross-body strap so you can go hands-free.
Fluffy Bags
Just as we long to be wrapped up in fuzzy teddy bear coats come winter, there’s something so appealing about a faux-fur bag. A big fluffy tote is ideal for carting around all your essentials, while a smaller multi-pocket bag (inspired by the utility trend) will help you downsize and declutter.
Clutch Bags
Probably the most popular bag style during Fashion Month, clutch bags were nestled under the arms of models at Chanel, Bottega Veneta, Lanvin, Loewe, Prada, Roland Mouret, and more.
These weren’t your typical eveningwear clutches, though. This season, it’s all about softer, slouchier styles, in muted tones that you can wear during the day. Or, you can even fake a clutch by folding over the top of a tote bag and carrying it by hand.
Quilted Bags
Thanks to Chanel, black quilted bags have been fashionable for decades – and that’s not about to change any time soon. But this season, we saw some cool padded styles in electric blue and green shades at Burberry and Balmain.
Keep it classic for fall with a square quilted crossbody with a chain strap, or switch it up with a commuter-friendly backpack in a brighter hue.
