After enjoying notoriety in the early aughts, halter neck tops are back – with a twist. Literally. Fashion’s chicest girls are ditching traditional halter necks for a new iteration, which features a criss-cross design. The fresh take on halter necklines can be traced back to the Spring/Summer 2020 shows of brands like Oscar de la Renta, Altuzarra, Ulla Johnson, and Richard Quinn.
The style also appeared on the runways at the Fall/Winter 2020 shows of Alexander McQueen and Bottega Veneta, further amplifying the trend. Seated in the front row at Saint Laurent’s Fall/Winter 2020 show, Hailey Beiber was snapped in a fitted crossover halter neck dress by the French luxury brand, and the look quickly went viral. Additionally, Chanel’s Resort 2021 runway witnessed a shimmering black maxi dress designed to reflect the style.
Since its emergence on the runways, celebrities and influencers alike have been sporting the criss-cross halter neck top. While some “It” girls opted for crossover tops and dresses, others achieved the look by repurposing scarves. Stylist Emili Sindlev served up an example by fashioning a scarf in a criss-cross halter pattern. Charlotte Knowles‘ ‘Anti’ top has been incredibly popular since Kardashian-Jenner sisters Kim and Kylie were spotted wearing the design.
