It might have been the fourth of July in America this weekend, but it was also a big day for David and Victoria Beckham, who celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary as an iconic couple.
The former Spice Girl and footballer famously tied the knot back in 1999 at Ireland’s Luttrellstown Castle, in a lavish celebrity ceremony that involved thrones, a tiara, and several outrageous outfit changes.
Reminding her fans of the upcoming occasion, Victoria took to Instagram to ask her followers for their opinion on her date night outfit. ‘It’s me and @davidbeckham’s 21st wedding anniversary this weekend so I’m getting ready for date night! What do you think I should wear? x vb,’ she posted.
Victoria looked every bit the polished fashion mogul in an impeccably cut cream trouser suit with a crisp white shirt, but the Beckhams haven’t always hit the mark when it comes to sartorial choices. From dodgy hairdos to bling-encrusted outfits, take a look back at some of their worst fashion mishaps from over the years.
This Matrix Look
We’re pretty sure David Beckham would be horrified to revisit this Matrix-inspired trench coat he wore to a London screening of Withnail and I in 2001.
From the pointless dangly choker to the frosted haircuts, everything about this red-carpet photo represents the questionable style of the early millennium.
This Double-Denim Number
While Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake may forever be the poster pair for double denim, Victoria Beckham gave them a run for their money in this distressed corset and jeans look.
Around the same time in 2000, David Beckham started his questionable love affair with bandanas and sleeveless shirts. We’re not sure the dapper style icon will be bringing this look back anytime soon, but we appreciate his dedication to pushing the boundaries of menswear.
This Diamante Look
Who could forget this iconic #couplegoals moment at the MTV Movie Awards? The, ahem, subtle bling look was all the rage back in the day, but now it feels like a lot to take in. There’s the corseted dress, the super bling stilettos, David’s giant flashy cross necklace… and his rather out-of-place brown brogues.
Regardless of how we feel about it now, this look was iconic in 2002, and it was even immortalized into waxworks by Madame Tussauds.
This Orange Ruffle Look
When they weren’t living it up at ‘Beckingham Palace’, the couple was often photographed on nights out in central London back in the mid-2000s, which is where a lot of their fashion sins were committed. We’re not quite sure why Victoria opted for this ruffled orange dress for a cozy dinner at Gordon Ramsay‘s restaurant, but we definitely can’t imagine the super chic fashion designer wearing it now.
But hey, when you’re one of the most famous couples in the world, you can get away with a few style lows now and again.
This Very Beige Look
At the peak of their stardom, David and Victoria Beckham had moved on from totally matching outfits to subtly co-ordinating tones.
Take this blended beige look, for instance. The bin-bag dress, waistcoat, and baker-boy hat seem to merge into one sludgy color palette that looks pretty tired and dated in 2020. This was also the era when Victoria Beckham made the ‘lob’ (long-bob) the haircut of the year.
Thankfully, the Beckhams are able to see the funny side of their experimental fashion choices, and David has freely held his hands up to making mistakes in the past. “What were we thinking? I look back on some of the stuff and think, ‘I can’t believe I actually wore that,’ he once joked to H&M Magazine.
“I have no regrets, though – I knew at the time it was good!”
