Sofia Coppola, the brilliant director behind some of our favorites movies – Marie Antoinette, Lost in Translation, and The Bling Ring to name a few – brought her unique gifts to Chanel for its new ‘Chanel 19’ handbag campaign. Imagined in a collaboration between Coppola and Chanel Creative Director Virginie Viard, and shot by photography great Steven Meisel, the campaign takes a lighthearted turn.
In this exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the shoot, stars Margaret Qualley, Taylor Russell, and Marine Vacth are captured in action. Young, beautiful, and supremely talented, this line-up of stars reflects the new mood of the house alongside its revamped, softer ‘Chanel 19’ bag.
“The ‘Chanel 19’ bag is very cool. I feel slightly cooler when I wear it. When I grow up, I hope to be as cool as the ‘Chanel 19’ bag,” Qualley quipped on set. Although the luxury house is associated with classics, it has a prismatic way of reflecting modernity. Relying on three different personalities, this ‘Chanel 19’ campaign proves just how versatile Chanel can be.
“The mood of this campaign feels very buoyant, open, and friendly,” Coppola shared. “The colors and tones are exceptionally eye-catching and bright, and evoke a warmth and playful energy. It makes you want to smile. “I love how Steven shoots women and how he has captured each of their personalities – Margaret is exuberant, Taylor is bright and full of energy, and Marine is an elusive French beauty.”
