Soft pink lighting, cinema seating, and a plush patterned carpet signaled a theatrical show ahead at Miu Miu Fall/Winter 2020. Speckled with celebrities like Storm Reid from HBO’s Euphoria, popstar Rita Ora, and the Hadid sisters, le cinéma de la vie was a fitting and penultimate finish for Paris Fashion Week. After coronavirus consternation and last-minute cancellations miserably shrouded by gloomy skies, Miu Miu gave us a reason to forget all our troubles and go downtown, where all the lights are bright.
Many of the looks were twee, but bitten by a punch-drunk effect, lending them a frisson of erotic thrill.
Miuccia Prada’s downtown girl hailed from an alternate version of the 1940s. She was cat-eyed and confident in crushed satin frocks, floor-sweeping felt wool car coats, and fur-trimmed jackets paired with sheer, crystal-scored skirts. While some of these looks felt straightforward in their nostalgic styles, there were surprises in store. Adut Akech wore a wrist-length bodysuit in baby blue, while frou frou party dresses had their midsections removed and replaced with sheer paneling.
Skintight mixed plaids and puffas paired with checkered leggings gave way to molded leather and leopard print coats paired with spiked footwear. Many of the looks were twee, but bitten by a punch-drunk effect, lending them a frisson of erotic thrill. Yes, things are seriously bad out there, but just for a moment, Miu Miu’s bright and eccentric collection made us leave it all behind and soak in the audacious joy of the moment.
