In this month’s edition of Tala and the Tastemakers, Tala Samman speaks to stylist-turned-designer Lisa Marie Fernandez on all topics related to fashion, summer, and health.
In 2009, Lisa Marie Fernandez launched an eponymous line of beautifully tailored swimwear uniquely crafted from neoprene that ranged in styles from athletic to high-glam. Since then, her life has been a whirlwind of business, designing, and travel. When our contributing editor Tala Samman caught a few moments of her time, she took the opportunity to get in-depth information about her personal fashion preferences, and even a look at how Fernandez stays healthy when faced with a demanding, fast-paced schedule.
This jetsetting tastemaker stays fit so she can slip into her favorite high-waisted Celine trousers by embracing natural juices and smoothies, and she keeps her amazing mane intact by staying away from harsh chemical dyes or treatments. She uses her infrequent downtime to pamper herself with weekly manis and pedis, and maintains an interest in culture by visiting the hottest art fairs in the world. Read the interview below to find out more.
What are your favorite boutiques?
I have favorites in each city I visit: 10 Corso Como in Milan, Azzedine Alaïa and Céline in Paris, The Webster Miami, D’NA in Riyadh, Dover Street Market in London, and Boutique 1 in Dubai. My collection is stocked at all of my favorite boutiques, so that gives me even more of an excuse to visit and shop.
How would you describe your personal style?
I have a very eclectic sense of style. It depends on mood, climate, and location. I prefer style to fashion and am drawn to powerful, minimalistic clothes. Celine is my absolute favorite. I really relate to designers such as Phoebe Philo and Stella McCartney. Quality is extremely important to me, and I love heritage brands such as Hermès. I love to look and dress like a woman, and Azzedine Alaïa is the King for that.
I like to have everything I need when I’m moving around the world.
What influences your style?
My own personal lifestyle influences the way I dress. I’m not influenced by the external. I’m instinctive; I cannot explain why I’m intrinsically drawn to something or someplace. I buy and wear what I love.
What is your signature outfit?
Céline high-waisted trousers worn with a shirt or knit and high heels.
What will you be wearing this summer?
Dresses play an important part in my summer wardrobe. I love pieces from Duro Olowu and also have an extensive collection of unique pieces that I’ve discovered through my travels. I’m looking forward to wearing the new terry-cloth ponchos from my collection with Ancient Greek Sandals.
How do you stay healthy?
I take my nutrients in the form of vegetable juices and smoothies. New York City has a number of great places for healthy drinks. Liquiteria and Juice Press are my favorite.
Do you like juice cleanses?
I’m actually currently trying a juice detox from Juice Press.
How do you take care of your beautiful hair?
I don’t color it; I like my natural color.
What’s your fitness regimen?
I’ve never been big on workouts. Because of my travel schedule, it’s difficult to stick to a routine. I do have a personal trainer in New York and train at Body By Simone.
What are your skin savior products?
I try my best to only use clean products without chemicals on my skin. My favorite skin product is the Dr. Alkaitis skin oil. It’s 100% organic and made by a biochemist in Florida; It’s food for the skin. It’s a myth that oil clogs your pores. My daily beauty products are RMS Raw Beauty Coconut Cream makeup remover, Santa Maria Novella body oil, and organic jojoba oil.
How do you pamper yourself?
I pamper myself with massages. I also receive weekly manicure and pedicures.
Do you have a favorite spa?
Como Shambhala Estate in Ubud, Indonesia.
What is your favorite movie?
It’s impossible to pick just one. I really like The Kid Stays in the Picture, Rosemary’s Baby, The Godfather, and Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired.
What is the last book you read?
I prefer biographies. The last one I read was Steve Jobs’ biography.
What are your travel essentials?
I like to have everything I need when I’m moving around the world. My summer travel essentials are Globe-Trotter luggage, a Valextra 48 Hour bag, my MacBook, iPad, iPod, and iPhone, and a Smythson diary. I’ll also pack lots of bathing suits from my own line as well as Chloé and Bantu and a large selection of caftans, shirtdresses, and sheer pieces. A Celine canvas tote bag for the beach and Celine wedges in a few styles, Ancient Greek Sandals, and Rondini sandals are musts. Finally, I’ll pack and Hermès pochette for all my sun-protection products.
What is your favorite art gallery?
I don’t have a favorite art gallery but love attending all the art fairs around the world, from Art Basel in Switzerland to Frieze in London.
What’s on your music playlist these days?
I love Rihanna. My playlist is really eclectic and has everything from Radiohead to Chet Baker to Rodriguez.
What’s your cooking specialty?
Me, cook a meal? That’s very funny. I have absolutely no time to cook anything. That being said, I can make a very good spaghetti puttanesca.
What’s your coffee order?
Double espresso macchiato.
What are three things we may not know about you?
I am a Virgo, I am super organized, and I respect authenticity.
What’s your ideal night out?
My ideal night is a night in with friends at home or hanging out in my hotel room with room service.
