Bags have always been the ultimate status symbol, but over the past few years it’s become less about the right designer handbag, and more about having a sleek suitcase to show off as you roll through the airport. Even though monogrammed Louis Vuitton luggage is still papped as celebrities walk out of the airport, there’s an increasing trend for sleeker, more low-key suitcases that aren’t so obviously designer.

At first glance, these luggage brands may not look too different from each other as they all make hard-shell suitcases in a variety of colors. And yet, they all have defining features and designs which set them apart, and each has gained a cult following.

If you want to be in the know (since traveling is probably a distant dream for the future), these are the celeb-approved luggage labels of the moment…

1

Rimowa

The celebrity obsession with luggage brand Rimowa has even been immortalized in a song. In Coke White/Moscow by GoldLink, Pusha T raps: “Luggage is the new collab, duffle by Rimowa.”

Rimowa advertises itself like a fashion brand, rather than your average luggage company. It’s collaborated with Dior and Louis Vuitton as well as streetwear label Supreme, and enlisted celebs Lebron James, Adwoa Aboah, Virgil Abloh, and Roger Federer in its campaigns.

The bags themselves are simple and sleek: Boxy suitcases with distinctive vertical grooves. They come in all colors, but the one which catapulted Rimowa to fame was the clear bag in collaboration with Off-White. They don’t come cheap – the original cabin bag will set you back AED4,000.

Away

While Rimowa’s Instagram feed looks like it has been carefully curated by a high-fashion magazine editor, Away instead goes for the warm and friendly aesthetic. It shows beautiful scenery and exciting places to travel, with the help of cute animals and kids, and in most shots you’ll be able to spot an item of luggage.

Away bags come in similar shapes to Rimowa, but with horizontal indentations instead of vertical. They come in all the basic colors, but also have a wider variety of jazzy shades to make them easy to spot on the carousel.

Celebrities like Jessica Alba, Emma Roberts, and Ashley Graham have been spotted with Away luggage, while Karlie Kloss and Rashida Jones have collaborated with the brand. Away luggage is an investment, but slightly more affordable, with the average carry-on suitcase costing AED1,080.

It was even rumored the Duchess of Sussex gave attendants of her baby shower a piece of Away carry-on luggage.

Tumi

Tumi makes hard and soft shell cases with different patterns and colors, and all sorts of other bags as well.

It doesn’t mean Tumi is any less cool though – just look at one of its recent advertising campaigns, which recruited father-daughter duo Lenny and Zoe Kravitz to give us all a bit of wanderlust. Rosario Dawson and Alexander Skarsgard have both also appeared in campaigns.

For comparison, a standard hard-shell carry-on suitcase costs AED3,100.

Bric’s

Bric’s – the Italian luggage manufacturer – is used by everyone from Zac Efron to Amal Clooney and Lionel Messi.

Bric’s is more of an old-school, classic brand – many of the suitcases are sleek and have modern additions, like in-built charging capabilities, but there are also some more traditional styles which feature strap detailing around the outside. A standard hard-shell carry-on model costs AED600.
