While Selena Gomez’s return to music has been long awaited, we were still surprised when she dropped two singles out of nowhere last week. That seems to be the new release method du jour. The more unexpected the release the more seismic the reaction on social media, especially when the lyrical content of both songs appeared to be directed at a high-profile ex.
For fans, Jelena (Justin Bieber + Selena) was a defining celebrity romance. Years passed and the two grew older, and grew apart. The breakup was public and painful, and their rebounds were chronicled in trivial detail by the media. They got back together. They broke up again. Things were messy. It’s hard to heal when you’re hounded, when there is no peace.
A lot has happened in Gomez’s life in the past two years. She’s had life-threatening health problems and received a kidney transplant. She’s produced a hit show for Netflix called 13 Reasons Why, she’s shot fashion campaigns with Coach, and she’s appeared in Jim Jarmusch’s The Dead Don’t Die. But the lingering questions about her ex still haunted her in media interviews, and in releasing the two singles last week, she took back her narrative.
In “Lose You to Love Me” she parts ways with her past, saying, “And now the chapter is closed and done… And now it’s goodbye, it’s goodbye for us.” The emotional ballad acts as catharsis that leads to moving on – which is exactly what she does in her second single “Look at Her Now”. In this infectious pop song, Gomez sings, “Took a few years to soak up the tears… But look at her now, watch her go.” As of this moment, Gomez confesses to being “super, super single”, and ready to open herself up to love again. In fact, in two short days, we’re introduced to the new Gomez, someone who, by the looks of things, is at her most confident best. Four wardrobe changes in less than 48 hours introduce us to a renewed version of the pop star. She looks comfortable in her skin, and it shows.
Selena Gomez in Ganni
Selena came to slay in a cool tiger print dress by the covetable Copenhagen label Ganni. You can scoop up a similar version of the dress for AED 866 here.
Selena Gomez in Sies Marjan
This silk suit by Sies Marjan is so comfortable-looking that we nearly mistook it for a pair of pajamas. We tracked down a similar style for AED 1,973 here.
Selena Gomez in Frame
Another suit points to the star’s new focus on mature silhouettes, befitting her stronger, healthier frame of mind. Speaking of which, her suit is by Frame, and those awesome shoes she paired the look with come from Proenza Schouler.
Selena Gomez in Miu MIu
A sophisticated look is brought together by a combination of classic wardrobe staples: a sleeveless black top and a checkered skirt with a slightly hight waist. We’re willing to bet you could put together a similar ensemble with what already exists in your wardrobe. Barring that, invest in a checkered skirt like this one by McQ.
