Once again, Hedi Slimane went digging in the bon chic, bon genre (good style, good class) archives of the French upper class for Celine Spring/Summer 2020. As an extension of the previous collection, the looks didn’t differ much. There were denim culottes, trim little jackets, fur coats, and peasant dresses, and it was all well and good – except for its complete lack of creativity. 

In fact, the look Slimane did is so common to 1970s/1980s French upper class style that there is literally a guidebook for it. Thierry Mantoux published Le guide du bon chic bon genre in the 1980s, and vintage stores are still filled with the stuff. In updating the vernacular to fit the Slimane mold, a new generation of bon chic, bon genre girls is born.
