Once again, Hedi Slimane went digging in the bon chic, bon genre (good style, good class) archives of the French upper class for Celine Spring/Summer 2020, coming away with much of the same stuff as he did for Fall/Winter 2019. As an extension of the previous collection, the looks didn’t differ much. There were denim culottes, trim little jackets, fur coats, and peasant dresses, and it was all well and good – except for its complete lack of creativity.

In fact, the look Slimane did is so common to French style vernacular that there is literally a guidebook for it. Thierry Mantoux published Le guide du bon chic bon genre in the 1980s, and vintage stores are still filled with the stuff. At Celine, you’ll pay top dollar for it in the forthcoming season, but one has to wonder why anyone would.
