Like Fashion Week – which is currently underway in Paris after Gucci’s unexpected finale in Milan – television moves in cycles. Tomorrow night, a new broadcast season begins, which is why the night before, its heroes and legends are awarded during the annual Primetime Emmys. Now in its 71st year, the 2019 Emmy Awards brought together marquee shows like Game of Thrones – which had a total of 32 nominations  – and Saturday Night Live, with a few smaller contenders like Fleabag and Russian Doll also vying for top billing.

There were expected winners, like Game of Thrones for Best Drama Series, but some upsets happened along the way too. The phenomenal Phoebe Waller-Bridge upended all expectations by beating out Julia Louis-Dreyfus of VEEP for Best Comedy Actress. Waller-Bridge summed up the surprise best when she joked, “It’s so wonderful and reassuring to know that a dirty, pervy, angry and messed-up woman can make it to the Emmys,” referring to the delightfully peculiar character she plays in Fleabag.

As the 2019 Emmy Awards’ first host-less season, the ceremony was not without a few awkward moments along the way, but one place where things operated smoothly was the red carpet. A-listers, nominees, and guests wore a predictable amount of stunning gowns (including some designed by the region’s own Zuhair Murad, Elie Saab, and Georges Hobeika), but some also chose the unconventional route. For instance, Gwendoline Christie’s Gucci look went viral, drawing associations to Jesus.
