Sometimes, a whole show can be carried by its styling, its whole narrative told by the overall look. When it comes to a house like Max Mara – which has a fairly static, but incredibly appealing identity with its polished trenches and workwear separates – the Spring/Summer 2020 show came down to phenomenal styling. And it was all the better for it.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is having a moment. As the star of Fleabag and the writer behind the utterly brilliant first season of Killing Eve, she is the coolest girl in the world, IRL and onscreen. In fact, her star has risen so quickly that she has been tasked with sprucing up the new 007 film, featuring a female Bond for the first time ever.

Sometimes, she needs to blend into the crowd and, other times, she needs to stand out.

Max Mara’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection directly name checks Waller-Bridge, citing both her and the character she created for Killing Eve – a chaotic-neutral (sometimes good, sometimes bad, always unpredictable) female assassin – as its muses. For the forthcoming season, Creative Director Ian Phillips imagines the wardrobe of the new Bond, giving her a bold dark lip and Wednesday Addams braids tucked underneath smart military caps.

An army of spies came out first in three different versions of gray suiting, and their intimidation factor was non-negotiable. For the most part, Max Mara’s spy army was decked in tailored neutrals – with a few roomy trenches thrown in – but occasionally, it showed her in candy-colored pastels. Sometimes, she needs to blend into the crowd and, other times, she needs to stand out. There are options for both. According to the show notes, she’s “prepared for every eventuality” (as any good spy should be).
