When Beyoncé showed up to a basketball game over the weekend dressed in an eccentric, crescent-print ensemble – perfectly coordinated with the Houston Rockets’ team colors no less – it felt like nothing else mattered. What exactly was she wearing? And who was she wearing? We needed answers – fast.
Well, thanks to the Instagram account of one Zerina Akers – that’s Queen Bey’s stylist, for the uninitiated – we were able to get the lowdown. Behind the top, leggings, sock boots, and even gloves that covered nearly every inch of the popstar was none other than Marine Serre, who we’re officially declaring a fashion designer to watch. This may be the first time you’ve heard of Marine Serre, but we predict it won’t be the last. After all, it’s not every day that a 27-year-old designer can claim a stamp of approval from pop royalty.
Born and raised in France, Serre is known for creating “futurewear”, a description synonymous with the design philosophy woven into all five of her collections: environmental awareness, futurism, and of course all those loud prints that adorn her athletic styles and everyday pieces. She has also attributed Islamic symbols – like the crescent, which has been a recurring motif in her collections – as an influence on her work. Despite having debuted her brand at Paris Fashion Week last year, Serre is by no means a rookie.
A recipient of the 2017 LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers, she has built up her talent with the best, interning and working alongside Alexander McQueen, Dior, Maison Margiela, and Balenciaga over the years. Even the late Karl Lagerfeld gave Serre a shoutout in a 2018 interview, describing her as a “will of steel”. Through it all, the designer has gained quite the celebrity following, a snapshot of which we’re sharing in the gallery, below.
