It was 1998, and a brand new phenomenon by the name of Sex and the City was revolutionizing the realm of television. Finally, there was a show that centered on female friendships, didn’t pit women against each other, and depicted how vulnerable one could feel trying to make it in a major metropolis. Over 20 years later, the four main characters – Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, Samantha Jones, and Charlotte York – are still the archetypes that so many women model themselves after, proving the lasting influence of the show and the relationship-driven ideas behind it.
While the show was making history, so were its fashion moments, predominantly showcased on leading character Carrie, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. In fact, her ensembles were so iconic that SJP is associated with them to this day. Even if you were “a Charlotte”, you secretly wanted to be “a Carrie” because that meant access to a wardrobe stocked to the brim with the likes of Manolo Blahnik, Jean Paul Gaultier, and – of course – Fendi. It was Carrie, after all, who launched the Fendi ‘Baguette’ bag to “It” bag status after carrying it in multiple episodes. There was even a whole story arc that was set in Los Angeles and dedicated to the easeful bag, which was popular because it could be slung under your arm (like a baguette), making for hands-free use.
With Fendi’s recent reboot of the legendary ‘Baguette’ bag, you’re once more granted access to Carrie’s iconic style. What’s more is that the label has actually released a re-edition of the purple-sequin style that fans first spotted as Carrie was getting mugged “somewhere south of Houston Street”. Sold in Fendi boutiques worldwide starting in mid-July, the new ‘Baguette’ has been given a much-needed update; it can now be worn as a crossbody as well thanks to a detachable shoulder strap. And unlike Carrie, you (hopefully) won’t have to hand yours over to a sartorially savvy thief.
