If Prada’s Fall/Winter 2017 show exemplified a teenage dream – right down to the set that was decorated like a teenybopper’s bedroom – then Miu Miu’s Fall/Winter 2019 presentation was a teenage nightmare. Fueled by a soundtrack supplied by Dolly Parton’s rendition of Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven and fellow British metal band Motörhead, the Miu Miu girl was clearly in the throes of rebellion.

Where she was once prim, she was now on the prowl, looking for mischief while hiding her intent in plain sight. Beneath a chic variety of capes, she sported tiny shorts, thigh-high stockings, and towering combat boots – the perfect outerwear foil for fooling mom and dad as she breezes past them on her way out the door.

Twee florals, camouflage prints, and tension between dark and light were at the center of Miu Miu’s collection, which spoke to teenage interior life particularly well. We’re still close enough to our teenage years to (sort of) remember what it was like, trying to rise to the high expectations placed on us, but also burning with a desire to explore, to push boundaries, to run towards freedom – even if that means tripping along the way and falling flat.
