“The bags under my eyes are Prada” used to be the fashion meme to end all fashion memes – until Simon Porte Jacquemus created ‘Le Chiquito’, that is. Making its debut during Paris Fashion Week, the microbag is so small that even the earrings of the models who carried it were bigger. But despite its obvious shortcomings, the fashion world can’t be more in love with this absurdly adorable accessory – us included.
Playing a large part in the Fall/Winter 2019 collection entitled ‘La Collectionneuse’, it was more than just eye candy – it also held the invitation for the show’s attendees. And while there’s only a handful of things that can actually fit inside – a singular bobby pin or a piece of gum? – we can’t help but fall for it. Naturally, it took no time for the internet to take note of the bag’s tiny stature, and even the designer got in on the joke.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the French designer play with proportions. Giant beach totes, oversized straw hats, larger-than-life silhouettes, and exaggerated shoulders all tend to feature in the typical Jacquemus aesthetic. Now, he seems to have moved on to the other side of the size spectrum, with his microscopic creation producing comedy gold on Twitter – as evidenced by the tweets, below. But really, with a 12cm x 6cm handbag priced at $486, what else did Jacquemus expect?
