Isabel Marant has been obsessed with the 1980s lately, and she shows no sign of shifting course. Her clothes were once breezy and now they are solid, her collections filled with thick cabled sweaters, quilted-and-padded fabrics, and yards of utilitarian khaki nylon.

Fall/Winter 2019 leans even more heavily on these elements, with quarterback-sized shoulder silhouettes thrown into the mix. That being said, she is careful to cinch the waist with studded concho belts and tailoring so that the female figure isn’t lost under her carefully swaddled layers. Her collection blended some of the 80s theme with hints of westernwear, prairie patterns, and the occasional flash of animal print. It was glamorous, without really forcing it.

In fashion, an excess of 1980s influences continues to pervade the scene. Here’s a guess why: Donald Trump is still (inexplicably) President. He rose to fame as a real-estate mogul, becoming something of a 1980s icon, and has resurrected a zombie horde of Reagan-era policies. Suddenly, it feels like we’re in a time warp. Fashion has digested this feeling and started churning out power suits and pointy shoulders like there’s no tomorrow. And maybe there isn’t. And maybe this all feeds one giant coping mechanism.
