Fall/Winter 2019 has seen a surge of renewed interest in the pillars of certain houses. Marc Jacobs pulled from his greatest hits, Burberry celebrated its bifurcated identity, Fendi paid loving homage to the man that mapped its DNA, and Salvatore Ferragamo resurrected the leather goods that made them a bedrock Milan brand. “Heritage” is practically a buzzword this season.

So, if your whole entire thing is knits, then why not pull that thread, and run. That’s exactly what happened at Missoni, and the effects were stunning. Angela Missoni addressed it head on, cluing us into the nature of the clothes, saying, “Everything is knit, even if it looks like it isn’t.” Given how smooth and decidedly not-knit some of her pieces look, this technique is a feat of engineering wonder.

Prints were bold, subtly tribal, but still appealing to a wide demographic. One can imagine a Coachella kid loving this collection just as much as a lady who lunches. There were sophisticated felted wool coats, textured suits, and glittering gowns for the bougie set, and sparkling Lurex coordinated separates, ribbed knit capes, and haute-hippie sweaters for the youth brigade.

More brands would benefit from this type of self-awareness.

There was a subtle serenity to this collection that we haven’t seen at Missoni in a long time, and it had everything to do with building upon the thing they do best. More brands would benefit from this type of self-awareness.
